Glendora, CA May 28, 2021 – The IEEE-IAS/PCA recently announced top honors for technical papers submitted for review and presentation at the 63rd Annual IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Conference held virtually. Top paper was awarded to CalPortland’s Adam Chapman for his paper, “Applying Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Technology in the Cement and Mining Industry.”  The CalPortland paper was chosen as the best from 27 peer-reviewed papers presented at the virtual conference.

Papers were graded by a panel of reviewers and were evaluated based on the quality of the written paper and the presentation at the conference. Chapman’s technical paper and presentation described how to efficiently and practically utilize a UAV program within the cement and mining industry. Chapman discussed how the implementation of a UAV fleet program can help modernize existing workforce by creating safer and efficient workplaces. He explained the importance of photogrammetry to collect and analyze data to streamline business functions such as inventorying and site planning.

“Adam’s topic of UAV technology truly exemplifies the spirit of the top paper award at the IEEE-IAS/PCA cement conference as it described a new and innovative technology and how it could be applied to the cement industry. His paper and presentation met the high quality standards set forth by the IEEE Cement Industry Working Groups, which is quite a feat. As a valued team member of the CalPortland Engineering Department, we couldn’t be happier for his achievement,” said Stephen Coppinger, Vice President, Engineering Services, CalPortland.

“I’m honored to receive this award from my peers at the IEEE-IAS/PCA-it was an unexpected and exciting surprise,” remarked Chapman, “I was unsure how the topic would resonate with peers and attendees but happy that it provided insight into an effective, usable technology in our industry. Big thanks to my colleagues, Steve, Alan, and Ed, for their support and guidance. Again, thank you for the recognition!”

In a tie for the Second Place IEEE-IAS/PCA Paper Award, Alan Simmons, CalPortland’s Director of Controls & Electrical Engineering, coauthored a paper with thyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions’ Samira Rashidi and Stefan Diedhofen titled “Implementation of Studded Roll Bodies for Raw Material HPGR Grinding System,” that also received recognition.

The IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Industry Conference is the largest conference in the cement industry and includes presentations of the latest technology covering a variety of topics important to the industry. More information on the papers and the conference can be found at www.cementconference.org.
