July 16, 2024 Summerlin, NVCalPortland is proud to announce four plants achieved the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry.  The ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry recognizes plants that achieve a 10% reduction in energy intensity within five years. The average energy intensity reduction for all four plants was 38.4 percent.

By achieving the ENERGY STAR Challenge, CalPortland’s Higley, AZ; Lompoc, CA; Red Mountain, AZ; and Solvang, CA plants continue to demonstrate a commitment to protecting the environment by improving energy performance with ENERGY STAR.

“Achieving the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry recognizes the significant accomplishments and dedication of our plants to improve energy efficiency,” said Allen Hamblen, President/CEO of CalPortland. “We are honored to be recognized by the EPA for our commitment to protecting the environment and the community.”

Examples of energy reduction actions by each of the four facilities are identified below along with their corresponding percentage energy intensity reduction from baseline:

The Higley, AZ Ready Mix plant reduced its energy intensity by 22.5% in three years.

  • Upgraded batching system to automate controls. Belts automatically shut off when there is no material detected, limiting belt run time.

The Lompoc, CA Ready Mix plant reduced its energy intensity by 71.1% in three years!

  • Major building upgrade including all lighting and electrical equipment with high efficiency equipment and LED lighting
  • Operational improvements to increase production time

The Red Mountain, AZ Ready Mix plant reduced its energy intensity by 28.5% in three years.

  • Upgraded all lighting to LED lighting
  • Implemented a recycled water system to reduce water usage

The Solvang, CA Ready Mix plant reduced its energy intensity by 31.4% in five years.

  • Upgraded lighting to LED lighting
  • Improvement to operations leading to increased production with no electrical load increase

CalPortland Company was honored earlier in 2024 with its TWENTIETH consecutive national EPA ENERGY STAR PARTNER OF THE YEAR – Sustained Excellence Award. The repeated achievement of this prestigious award due to the company’s dedication to energy management by its employees is a feat that has never been matched by any U.S. industrial company.

The ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry is a national call-to-action to improve energy efficiency of America’s manufacturers by 10% or more.  By taking the ENERGY STAR Challenge, manufacturing sites set a goal to reduce their energy intensity by 10% within 5 years.
