CalPortland has a long history of sustainable manufacturing. Founded in 1891, the company started plans for the first cement plant in the Western United States in Colton, California. Today, CalPortland is home to four cement plants, each with its own unique technologies. In addition to cement plants and terminals, CalPortland also has over seventy ready mix plants and twenty-four aggregate facilities operating in the Western United States and Canada.

CalPortland was recognized for its manufacturing facilities in Arizona, including the Rillito cement plant, located just north of Tucson. The Rillito plant was constructed in 1948 and has evolved into the modernized cement production facility it is today. Also serving Arizona, there are now five aggregate sites, 19 ready mix plants, two cement terminals and a materials testing lab. At each of its facilities, CalPortland takes pride in searching for new ways to achieve sustainable and energy efficient production, reflecting the company’s commitment to providing real solutions for the future environment.

Cement is a unique construction material with unparalleled characteristics that brings structure and stability to our built environment. Cement, used in the production of concrete, creates a construction material with unmatched strength, durability, and longevity. As a result of these features, concrete provides the foundation for the nation’s built environment through structures that are resilient and can withstand the extreme weather events that accompany climate change. This includes housing, schools, highways, waterways, and countless other items, that the people of Arizona depend on every day. Concrete is critical to the development of a sustainable future and CalPortland is leading the way by building sustainably, utilizing new innovative approaches, and advocating for updated technology.
